Woodies for Sennheiser HD650

Padauk Deep Woodies for HD650 from Headphile.

I have had nothing so bad about sound quality of HD650, while I do not like its exterior design so much. I just wanted to put something fancy onto my HD650, such like wooden parts. I searched on web and found Headphile's web site.

At first glance of the web site, I found Full Screen version are right things for my HD650. I also thought, at that moment, modifying open-type headphones into closed-type is nothing but sacrilege against the original designer. Anyway, I started to read through Headphile web site and I found below sentence;
"For 650's I like either full screen (virtually cosmetic only) or Deep version. Some like standard depth on 650's also..."

This sentence made me think that Headphile guy is well aware about the advantage of HD650 sound, but still he likes closed modified version with deep woodies. I continued reading web site more carefully. After reading through all pages of Headphile site, I realized that this kind of work is not an easy thing and is only possible by a person who has something special. I ordered deep version of padauk tree for my HD650 finally, trusting Headphile guy's comment above.

After I placed an order, I found many good reasons for my choice - deep closed woodies.

  • I used to feel sound from HD650 is somewhat indirect, and less passionate
  • Such deep big enclosures may be out of question in normal product planning procedure in conventional manufacturers. So, no one should know exact matching issue between drivers for open-type headphones and deep wooden exclosures
  • and so on...

They are really hand crafted from solid blocks of natural wood.

This may be over damped. Headphile's recommendation on their web is much less.

As a nature of this kind of things, they may require a certain burning-in hours. My initial impression of their sound is exactly what I expected - direct and solid. HD650 with closed woodies are now clearer than DT770PRO, still with wider sound stage.

They are, of course, not the straight forward improvement of the original HD650. They are clear and direct, but I agree there are many other better choices, such like headphones from Ultrasone, if we pursue clear and direct sounding. Though, I think HD650 w/woodies still have their raison d'etre, and I believe I will hear a sound which is only possible by extra-deep woodies.
